Are There Monsters in My Closet? #bookreview by Jack Batcher

    WAHMReviewer – Melissa McClure

Books are my weakness, especially children’s books. I have a library in my daycare home and am a strong believer in the importance of literacy. Every child loves a good story read to them. When I was browsing Facebook and saw that Are There Monsters In My Closet by Jack Batcher was up for review I quickly pounced on the post and I was the lucky reviewer who got selected to do the review!

Are There Monsters in My Closet.

I contacted Jack via email and he quickly responded enthusiastically to my email regarding the review. Within a matter of a few days he emailed me back and already had his book in the mail heading my way. I was so excited I told my kids about our new book that was coming and they were just as excited to receive the book as I was. Each child, whether they are my own boys or my daycare kids, cannot wait for story time; a new book added to our collection… exciting!

Always check for Monsters

Jack’s book arrived while I was out of town for a few days and when I got home I had a wonderful package waiting for me on my counter (who doesn’t love to come home to a package?). I opened up the package and much to my surprise I had an autographed copy of the book! Both of my boys immediately wanted the book. They were flipping through the pages and smiling at the beautiful bright illustrations. It was late at night so I told them they had to go to bed that we would share the book with the daycare kids at story time the next day. With a bit of a struggle I finally got them to agree that they had to wait just a little longer to hear the story.

The day as finally come

FINALLY! The day has come! As the daycare kiddos were eating a snack, we just couldn’t wait any longer so I read “Are there monsters in my closet?” to them while they ate. This book is so well written that it was easy to do “voice changes” for the kids and act out the story a little bit while reading. All the kiddos love a good “scared” or a loud “monster” voice.

The story starts out with a little boy named Calvin who hears noises….but where are they coming from? Are they outside noises? Nope……. Did something get into his room?………….It’s definitely in the closet, but what is it?!?!? It has to be the monsters in his closet that his sisters warned him about………

The children’ couldn’t keep their eyes off the book, even the 1 year old little boy that comes. By the time that I finished the story the kids were begging for me to read the story again. Needless to say I ended up reading the story 2 more times after the original reading. Then the kids carried the book all over the house and “read” the book to each other, usually turning to the page that had the “monster” on the page.

   Thank you Jack

Roughly 9 years ago Jack’s sister Cheryl was due to have her third child, Calvin, join their family along with her two daughters Brinna and Melody. This thought sent Jack’s memories into motion. He remembers playing pranks and other tricks on his family members thus leading him to the idea of this book.

Jack started his search in 2004 to find the perfect illustrator that could give him the illustrations that would make his story really come to life. Almost 10 years later after many ups and downs he met Charles Berton at The Artist Pad in Smithtown in 2013. Charles like his story and agreed to do the illustrations for “Are there monsters in my closet?”

On May 25, 2013 the book was finally published.

Jack’s book is available through his website at http://www.jackbatcher.comas well as Amazon.

Also while you are out surfing the web for Jack’s book, check out his Facebook page ( and give it a “like” while you’re there.

Grey and Green Summer Yumminess! #skincare #beauty

WAHMReviewer – Amie Kelp

I was excited to have the opportunity to review for Grey and Green! Jen has a similar passion as mine for going as natural as possible with bath and body care and after talking with her a bit and learning more about her SLS and detergent free soaps, I was so ready to try out her products. I love that she uses natural bases for her lotions and body butters, as well as a wide variety of essential and fragrance oils.

Green and Grey Products

I received a sweet little package a few days later from Grey and Green and I opened it with excitement! Wrapped in little organza bags were yummy little containers of body butter, a lotion bar, a coffee scrub, Tardis molded hand soaps and a sweet little rose shaped coconut milk soap with a banana fragrance that was amazingly yummy!

Immediately I opened each little tub and loved all of the fragrances and couldn’t decide which to try first! Since it was mid afternoon and I didn’t have time to lather up and indulge head to toe in banana fragrance of the coconut milk soap, I went for the Whipped Body Butter scented with Margarita Lime which was sweet with a perfect hint of lime. I applied a bit to the back of my hand to test out the fragrance on me and to feel the consistency of the Shea butter, Coconut oil, Almond oil and fragrance blend. Super yummy and refreshing fragrance! After using this whipped body butter a few times, I continued to love the lime scent and the whipped blend absorbed well into my skin. There was an exfoliant of some sort blended into the butter that I did not personally care for, but overall I really enjoyed it and it’s summery fragrance.

Lotion Bar
The second little tin that I opened was the Grey and Green Lotion Bar. This Orange Cream Vanilla scented bar was so interesting to me! I love the concept of a “bar” of lotion! How many times have I had a bottle of lotion leak in my purse or drop it to have it bust open and make a mess! Lol…I was ready to try this lotion bar of coconut oil, shea butter and beeswax with orange cream vanilla fragrance. Can you imagine an orange creamsicle moisturizing your skin? Yummy! I might add, this layered with the Margarita Lime Whipped body butter was sooooooo yumalicious! Back to the lotion bar…it comes in a little silver tin and was cylinder in shape, I tipped the tin upside down to get the lotion to pop out in my hand. I wasn’t sure exactly how to “apply” the lotion, so I just rubbed it on the back of my hand and plenty came off on my hands as I held it too. I put the bar back in the tin and massaged in the lotion that was on my skin from the bar. This one has beeswax in it, which I assume helps hold some of its shape and firmness of the bar, but beeswax also gives extra protection for the skin locking in moisture, which I love…but that also means it takes a little longer to absorb into the skin like most natural based products. I don’t mind this because I know the many benefits of the ingredients. I did have one funny moment with the lotion bar while applying it at bedtime one night. As I was trying to rub the bar on the heels of my feet, the warmth of my hands made the bar a bit slippery and it slipped out of my hands just like a bar of soap in the shower flying across the room! Lol…I have been a bit more careful since then and have not sent the lotion bar flying! This would be a perfect way to travel with lotion, esp when flying and you don’t want a lotion bottle leaking in your toiletries bag!

Keeping up with the summery scents, I tried the Grey and Green coconut milk banana soap. This soap has a very yummy banana scent and has a nice lather to it. I don’t think it was as cleansing as I needed after workouts, but I found it a great luxury soap and was perfect for layering with other fruity summer scents.

The Tardis soaps from Dr. Who, I have been saving for my daughter’s birthday, but she caught a glimpse of them and was over the top excited! She is a HUGE Dr. Who fan and I don’t know if she will choose to use the soaps or keep them as fun “trinkets” to display with all of her fun girly favorite items…either way, she LOVES them and that is all that matters when it comes to molded decorative soaps! These are perfect for any Dr. Who fan! Jen has a variety of other molded soaps that were a lot of fun! Everything from Hello Kitty to pink little hand guns…lol…those would be a perfect gift for some one!

The last item I enjoyed from Grey and Green was the Orange Coffee Sugar Scrub. This was a great pick me up in the morning, whether I used it head to toe in the shower or as a quick hand scrub to exfoliate and add a bit of moisture when washing my hands. The coffee and white sugar scrub was a nice exfoliant, without being too harsh or scratchy. I love the coffee and orange scent, but I would like to have just a bit more of the almond oil base to help hold the coffee grounds together a bit more and that extra touch of moisture that I love from almond oil, but others might find that to be a bit too “oily” if they don’t care for natural oil moisturizers. This would already have the perfect consistency for them!

Be sure to check out Grey and Green on facebook or at her Etsy shop.

Younique with Tammy Ward
My friend Tammy put a request out on Facebook. She wanted a few ladies to do some reviews on Younique make-up. So of course I said I would! She let me choose which product I wanted to try. I’ve loved every Younique product I’ve used but I was super interested in their new Beachfront Bronzer. She helped me decide on which color would be best for my complexion. We chose Sunset.

Younique Bronser

I must say I wasn’t overly surprised that I loved the product. It was a great way to add definition to my face, as you can see from my before and after pictures.

However, what did surprise me was its versatility. You can use it as a powder or even as eye shadow. I was super impressed the other day. I was running late and needed to get my make-up done quickly. I grabbed the Beachfront Bronzer, used it as an eyeshadow, and on my cheeks, forehead and nose. Threw on some Moodstruck eyeliner in Perfect and my Lucrative lip gloss in Lucky and was good to go! Probably 60 seconds total from naked face to make-up face. Check out the results!

Kodiak Cakes

WAHM Reviewer – Kathy Crow

Healthy delicious whole wheat mixes are the base of the company.

KodiakCakes WAHMReview

The Baker mills company began in 1994 but the original company and recipes go back several years before that. The recipes belonged to Wallace Christofferson and were passed down to his daughter who made them for her family and eventually began Kodiak Cakes. They started with Hot Cakes and waffles and later added both cookies and brownies. They have a well produced Web Site and a Facebook page. This company has been featured on Martha Stewart shows and has been endorsed by Weight Watchers, Healthy Cooking and Diabetic Living magazines. The website includes recipes as well easily followed cooking tips.

Kodiak Cakes Pancakes WAHMReview

When the Kodiak Cakes was approached for a review, they gladly sent two boxes of Pancake Mix with coupons for more. The pancakes are easy to make adding only water. So, if an ice storm should come quickly and there are no eggs in the house then you can still have healthy pancakes without a worry.

The website also includes businesses that carry Kodiak Cakes products. The most likely in our area is Target.
We have enjoyed the pancakes and plan to share the boxes and coupons with friends. They are lite and absorb the butter nicely. Very delicious indeed.

Pathways to Happiness

WAHM Reviewer ~ Laura Heinle

Pathways to Happiness is owned and run by Emily Young. She offers a variety of different types of sessions to help you on your pathway to happiness. Sessions include: The Emotion Code, The Body Code, The Balance Procedure, Angel Card Readings, Law of Attraction, Quantum Touch, and Meditation. Each one is described in more detail on her site HERE

energy healing session.

I was selected to receive an Emotion Code session from Emily. We did this via facebook chat, which worked out perfectly for me as it could be done in real time, but I didn’t have to worry about my kids being noisy in the background. It only took about 30 minutes from start to finish.
Emily was very in depth and spot on with a lot of her readings. I have never had this type of reading and did not know what to expect at all. I was pleasantly surprised. Throughout the reading, she would list an emotion that was blocking my path and at what age it started. Then she would go through her process of releasing that block. In all, she listed and cleared 9 emotions for me. I really did feel more at ease once she was done. It was almost like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders.
I highly recommend contacting Emily if you feel blocked in any way. She definitely has a gift and knows how to use it.
For the rest of January, she is holding a half off sale on all of her sessions. Be sure to book a session with her before that is up! It’s a great deal and you’ll definitely be getting your money’s worth.
