The Mystery of the Lost Recipe and The Mystery of the Lost Uniforms #books #childrensbooks #IamReading

Book reviews are always one of my favorite reviews to do for authors. I love finding out about each author and their interests. Children’s books especially intrigue me as I am a licensed child care provider, but, when I was contacted to review a couple books about healthy eating AND exercise I was all in. I am always looking for new ways to incorporate this concept to the children at an early age.

While I was waiting for the books to arrive I did a little research about the books and the author that I was about to review. Jerome Jones is a teacher and a coach to school aged children from elementary to high school. While teaching in Utah he was inspired to start writing children stories. “The Mystery of the Lost Recipe” and “The Mystery of the Lost Uniforms” were written while Mr. Jones taught a 4th grade class about nutrition and exercise.

On a Thursday morning while putting my sons, Jayden and Gavin, on the bus I remembered that I had completely forgotten to get the mail Wednesday afternoon. I walked to the mailbox and there was a manilla envelope address to me. When I opened it I was absolutely excited. Every time I get a new review and it arrives it’s like Christmas for me. I opened the package and was amazed at the quality of the books that Mr. Jones had created. Not only had he sent his two hardcover books, he also sent stickers for the kids. My sons each took one before they got a chance to read the book (remember they were waiting to board the bus) and was excited to tell their friends about the new story adventure they would surely go on when they got home.

The Mystery of the Lost Recipe

After my sons got on the bus to go to school I decided that I would do a little experiment to see how well the different age groups would take to the books. When I was doing research I saw Mr. Jones was a elementary to high school coach and teacher, so I thought I would see how well my early childhood children would like the books as well as my elementary aged sons.

While waiting for my daycare children to arrive I was flipping through the book. The illustrations were amazing! Jose Galeano did an impeccable job creating bright and vibrant illustrations to go with Mr. Jone’s books.

My daycare children arrived and were excited to hear that we were going to change up the lesson plans for the day and learn about Abby and Tommy, the main characters and mystery solvers in the book. During story time I read to the children, “The Mystery of the Lost Recipe.” The ages of the children are 1, 2, and 3 who were attending care at the time.

I started reading the book and was honestly expecting the children to eventually lose interest (not meaning this in a mean way, just because the children are so young and the books are pretty long) and move away from the circle. I was quickly proved wrong, even the 1 year old stayed to hear the story of Abby and Tommy solving the lost recipe issue. The children actually stopped me part way through to tell me they loved lasagna and blueberries on their waffles sounded yummy. After I was done reading the book, the 2 and 3 year old wanted to take the book and read it again!

Later on that day my sons got home and were excited to go on a new adventure and find out about these new books that they told their friends about with their new stickers (which are plastered on their planner they are required to take back and forth to the teacher daily). Gavin started first and with help read through “The Mysteries of the Lost Recipes” and grabbed “The Mysteries of the Lost Uniform” without missing a beat. Jayden was there to help him read and finish the second book but both of the boys literally devoured both of the books. I was very excited to see how anxious they were to find out what happens in both of the books. Both Jayden and Gavin give “The Mysteries” books a big thumbs up.

If you are interested in checking out these books for your children (or maybe you run a daycare too!) I would highly recommend them to anyone. These books are bright, colorful, and very well written to keep the children engaged and learning. The next day at daycare we had blueberries for a snack and the kids continued to talk about Abby and Tommy and what other mysteries they might solve.

Throw Back Thursday: The Quiet Game

Do you remember the Quiet Game when growing up?  It should be called the “Mommy/Daddy are desperate for a few minutes of quiet” Game.  Or “If you don’t close your mouths for 2 minutes I might just lose it” Game.  Or “Don’t You Ever Stop Talking” Game.  But I digress….  I was talking with someone the other day about our kiddos and the Quiet Game came up…she had never HEARD of it!  I mean she was about 5 years younger than me but COME ON!  Anyway, we were talking about travelling in the car with our kids and my contribution was how my two Bugs, who I love more than life itself (yes it’s a disclaimer because you might question the truth of that before this post is finished! lol) were on track to drive me absolutely crazy in the car! (which according to my husband is an exceptionally short trip!!!)  Anyway…my LoveBug suggested that we all play “the Quiet game.”  I of course was all for it because it meant I might actually get a few minutes of the all elusive thing called…quiet.  The game went something like this:

LoveBug (my 11 year old daughter):  “ok…1, 2,3…quiet”

*****About 2 seconds of silence passed*****

Bug (my 8 year old son):  “Pause…ok so if someone coughs or sneezes it doesn’t count.  Ok UnPause. 1,2,3…quiet”

*****About 2 more seconds of silence passed*****

LoveBug: “Aachoo!  (fake sneeze – Bug starts pointing)  Pause…I sneezed it doesn’t count.  UnPause.  1,2,3…quiet”

*****About 2 more seconds of silence passed*****

Bug:  “Pause…if you laugh without opening your mouth it doesn’t count.  UnPause. 1,2,3…quiet”

Bug:  “Pause”

Me:   STOP!!!  You can’t PAUSE the QUIET GAME!!!!!!!!

******************************************************************************

We are a busy family – like most families are. We spend a lot of time in the car between school activities, sports activities and fun family road trips. We have a permanent site at a campground that we spend A LOT of time at during spring weekends and WEEKS at during the summer.  It’s about a 2 1/2 hour car drive to get there…and to get back home.  As a parent The Quiet Game is supposed to get me through long car drives, loud dinners…apparently the game has changed dramatically since I was young and it will not help me in this area. If only we could turn back time…

#Handmade Fashion with Sanstemar on #Etsy

WAHMReviewer – Laura HeinIe

I like to shop on etsy, A LOT. I usually find some pretty cool items. When I stumbled across Sanstemar, they were no exception. I instantly wanted one of their cute handkerchief dresses for my daughter. I mean, look at this cute dress!

Sanstemar Dress

Just looking at it makes me think of warm summer days, playing in the sun. How about you?

The dress is beautifully crafted and comes in a variety of different colors and patterns. They even give you the option for a custom order if you don’t see what you would like. The dress in the picture is the one that was sent to me for this review. It fits my daughter nicely. It’s tight enough at the top that it doesn’t fall down, yet it’s not so tight that it’s uncomfortable. She can move and play in it freely. The seams are all very well done, so there’s no concern of tearing. The ribbon at the top finishes it off nicely.

I also received this very cute purse.

Sanstemar Purse

Isn’t that just great!? I love it! Just like the dress, this one is also handcrafted with the same care and quality as the dress. The inside is lined with an upcycled t-shirt and makes it easy to find what you are looking for inside the purse.

Sanstemar Inside of Purse

All pockets on the outside of the purse are fully functional. They have not been sewn shut, so you can store your chap stick, or phone there for easy access.

Sanstemar also carries weighted blankets and lap pads for those with sensory disorders. I did not receive this item for review, but if the purse and dress are of any indication, these products will not disappoint. Both the purse and dress are so well made that I wouldn’t have to think twice before ordering from Sanstemar.

WAHMReviewer – Laura

I am so excited to tell you about this cool baby and toddler toy! There are many different teething options out there for our sweet little ones, but this one takes the cake! Handmade, by a wonderful woman, they are top quality!

It all started when Suzi, the owner, received a similar giraffe as a gift for her baby. She was told that it had been made by her friend’s grandmother, who had since passed away. So many people loved it and wanted one for their own children that she decided to make her own pattern for this cute little giraffe. With a few changes, the Starbright Baby Giraffe was born!

Starbright Baby brings us a line of Teething Giraffes, Toddler Giraffes, Rhinos and much more! They are all handmade by a group of three women. They use very high quality materials that are completely safe for your baby.

The color/pattern choices available are simply amazing! There are so many choices that it’s hard to make a decision. That’s why I just told Suzi what colors my daughter liked and let her choose for me. She did a wonderful job! My daughter loved it and couldn’t wait to get her hands on her cute Toddler Giraffe! I haven’t been able to get my hands on it for more than a few seconds at a time, silly girl.

Starbright WAHMReviews 3

What I have been able to see is that it’s very durable. This adorable little giraffe goes everywhere with us and shoes no sign of all of its adventures yet. It’s still in the perfect condition that it was on day one! Pretty good for a toy that goes everywhere with a 3 year old!

If you are looking for that perfect, unique gift for an expectant mother, or that sweet little toddler you know, this is it!

EZ Squeezees Review

EZ

EZ squeezees are my new favorite product…seriously.  I pack lunch for my two kiddos every day and the ONLY things that they don’t complain about are their applesauce pouches and yogurt tubes.  I complain about it though:  They are costly.  They are not re-useable.  Who knows what is growing inside those bags/tubes?!? (gross!)  So far though I have chosen to concede the argument in exchange for my kiddos eating yogurt and applesauce daily without complaint…but I’ve known it could be done better.

EZ squeezees knew it could be done better…AND THEY DID IT!  CELEBRATION music please!  EZ squeezees was developed in Baltimore (MD) by parents who concluded that “manufacturers of processed foods were capitalizing on (parents’) desires for convenient and nutritious foods.”  But now parents have an option that is cost-effective and eco-friendly.

EZ Squeezees:  Reusable food pouches for all ages. They are cost effective and eco friendly! They are BPA and Phthlate free!  The are dishwasher and freezer safe!  Plus you can write on the back of them so you don’t have to guess…or taste test…to figure out which one is applesauce and which one is the smoothie!  Best part yet?  They are super easy to use…just FILL*SQUEEZE*EAT*REPEAT!

EZSqueezees

Ok so my conclusion is that I can’t live without them.  But when I first received them in the mail I admit I was skeptical – mostly about cleaning them.  So I’ve put them to the test.  I’ve used them for several weeks filling them with applesauce, yogurt, yogurt with sprinkles, even a smoothie.  I even forgot to empty one for two days (in my defense my daughter left her lunchbox stuffed under the seat in the car.)  They have large side openings which make them easy to fill…and easy to clean.  I was able to easily rinse and scrub the inside of the pouch with a cloth before placing in the dishwasher.

If you are looking for a way to feed your child(ren) healthy and convenient foods or even a way to carry a healthy snack for yourself, I highly recommend EZ squeezees.  They even haverecipes listed on their website for fruits, veggies, smoothies, paleo, Whole30 and more!  By using EZ squeezees you can save money, save the environment, and feel good about “convenience” eating.

You can purchase EZ squeezee pouches online with your choice of small caps (ages 3+) orlarge caps (ages 0+)  For this review I tested the larger style lids which were easy to twist on and off and were about an inch and a half in diameter.  You can purchase a starter kit with two 3 packs of  pouches plus 6 replacement caps (either size) for $19.99, a 3 pack of pouches for $9.99 or a 9 pack of pouches for $24.99.
